One Thought

There's something of unity about us, isn't there?
No one would deny that we are one individual.
But are we not also in some way the same as all others—
to all life and to everything,
composed of the same star-born particles?
Isn’t that so?
How can both things be true,
that we are individual yet the same as a multitude?
In order to approach this fascinating question,
I try to imagine a One, not the number one, first of an endless series,
but One standing alone in and as itself.
Some have called it One without a second.
It needs nothing. It is itself, all that is.
It possesses its own inwardness,
keeping in mind that there is no inner nor outer,
that this inwardness is still itself this One.
Yes, this is mysterious.
How is inwardness not a second thing, but still the One itself?
I must hold to the vision
without discursive mind carving it up just yet.
From that inwardness—
the One’s self-contemplation that is itself, nowhere and empty—
springs a photon. But wait—is that a second thing?
No, this photon is still the One, arising in the One as itself.
As a product of the dynamic potential of that emptiness,
bearing within it all possible universes.
All possible consciousnesses underlying them.
All the principles that guide expression of One’s unchanging nature.
The One itself.
One of those principles is Being—ah, I am.
Do I not feel that somehow this One is in me, as me,
when all other expressions and experiences are laid to rest?
Is this not what is simply there
when deep sleep overtakes my mind and its productions?
Can I not even now feel the aura of its presence
beneath or behind all that is in this moment, all that I am?
Who is there to say?
These questions gather around the campfire of our minds
seeking an answer that can’t be given
to those asking without causing the one asking to disappear.
Never outside the One, created as its image,
the image one with itself, fathomless, formless, empty,
yet potentially all that is or ever could be.
With gratitude to the teachers and peace for all . . .
